While city officials are at the very early stages of updating the Central Park Master Plan with three conceptual designs cu rrently up for public comment, all of the proposals involve demolishing the current recrea tion center occu- pied by Self-Help. Based in San Francisco, the nonprofit offers an extensive array of services includ ing o perat- ing 12 activity centers, only two of which are on the Peninsula - one in San Mateo and another in Cupertino. But as the city prepares a new vision for the dow ntown park, the senior-serving Self-Help for the Elderly may be left having to find a new Peninsula location. On any g iven we ekday, a friend- ly group of seniors can be found gleefully gathered around a table playing mahjong, socializing at lunch or exercising while practic- ing tai chi at San Mateo’s Central Park.
